Older models you may already own, such as the 4K Max (1st gen, 2021), the 3rd-generation Fire TV Stick (2020) and the Fire TV Stick Lite (2020), run Fire OS 7 and still work with IPTV players. The 2nd-generation stick (2016–2019) runs Fire OS 5, and many current players no longer support it.
What matters most for IPTV
1. Fire OS or Vega OS
Fire OS is based on Android, so you can install players from the Appstore or, where allowed, from the developer’s own download link. Vega OS only runs apps from the Amazon Appstore. That rules out most popular IPTV players, which aren’t in the Appstore. Vega OS explained covers what does work.
2. Memory
Big channel lists and a full TV guide need memory. Models with 2 GB feel noticeably quicker when you scroll the guide and switch channels than the 1 GB models, and they’re less likely to slow down after an hour of watching.
3. Wi-Fi and Ethernet
Live TV needs a steady connection. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E cope better with busy home networks than Wi-Fi 5. For the most reliable picture, use a wired connection: the Cube has a port built in, and every stick can use Amazon’s Ethernet adapter. Fire TV Ethernet adapters explains the options.
4. 4K and codecs
All current 4K models decode HEVC, which most 4K channels use, and AV1. The HD models are limited to 1080p output, which is fine on smaller screens.
Before you buy
- Check the operating system in the product listing: newer and cheaper models may run Vega OS.
- Check the app you want to use. If it’s only available outside the Appstore, you need a Fire OS model.
- Consider an Android TV or Google TV device if you want the widest app choice; see Firestick vs Android TV box and the best streaming devices compared.
