Apple TV runs tvOS, and every app comes from the App Store. There’s no sideloading and no hunting for download links, which keeps setup simple and safe. The App Store has a good range of IPTV players, several of which are among the most refined on any platform.
Which Apple TV should you use?
| Model | Picture | Network | Verdict for IPTV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022), Wi-Fi + Ethernet | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ | Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet | The best choice: fast and wired |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, 2022), Wi-Fi | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ | Wi-Fi 6 | Excellent if your Wi-Fi is strong |
| Apple TV 4K (earlier generations) | 4K HDR | Wi-Fi and Ethernet | Still very capable |
| Apple TV HD | 1080p | Wi-Fi and Ethernet | Works, but slower with large lists |
If your router is near the TV, the model with an Ethernet port is worth it. A wired connection removes the main cause of buffering during busy evenings.
IPTV player apps on Apple TV
Look for these features when you choose a tvOS player:
- Xtream Codes support, so your channels, guide and films library load from one login.
- A grid TV guide you can scroll through by time, like a set-top box.
- Catch-up support, for programmes that have already aired.
- Favourites and hidden categories, to keep a big list manageable.
Popular tvOS players include IPTVX, UHF and iPlayTV. Most are free to download with a paid upgrade or subscription for the full feature set, and several offer a free trial. Apps and prices change, so check the current listing, including the developer name, before paying. Apple TV apps come only from the App Store, which removes the risk of fake downloads, but look-alike names still exist.
How to set up IPTV on Apple TV
Update tvOS
Go to Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software and install anything available.
Install a player from the App Store
Open the App Store on the Apple TV, select Search, type the player’s name and choose Get. You can also install from your iPhone’s App Store if your devices share an Apple Account and automatic downloads are on.
Add your login
Open the player and choose to add a playlist. Select Xtream Codes (sometimes called “Xtream API”) and enter the server address, username and password exactly as we sent them. If you received an M3U link, choose M3U and paste it. Many tvOS players let you type on your iPhone using the Apple TV Remote in Control Centre, which is much quicker than the on-screen keyboard.
Load the TV guide
With an Xtream Codes login, the guide usually loads automatically. With an M3U playlist, add the TV guide (EPG) link we sent in the player’s EPG settings. The first load takes a minute or two.
Turn on Match Content
Go to Settings → Video and Audio → Match Content and turn on Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate. Your Apple TV will then switch to HDR only when a programme is in HDR, and play sport and films at their native frame rate.
Getting the best picture on Apple TV
- Set the format to 4K SDR in Settings → Video and Audio → Format, with Match Content switched on. The Apple TV then steps up to HDR when the content calls for it, instead of forcing HDR on everything.
- Use an HDMI cable rated for 4K HDR (Premium High Speed or better), connected to a TV input that supports 4K at 60 Hz.
- Turn on the TV’s enhanced HDMI mode for that input. Our 8K and 4K guide lists the name for each TV brand.
- Prefer Ethernet. If you’re on Wi-Fi, keep the Apple TV in the open rather than inside a cabinet.
Using your iPhone with Apple TV
Your iPhone can act as a keyboard and remote through the Apple TV Remote in Control Centre, which makes entering logins and searching far easier. Many iPhone players also support AirPlay, so you can start something on your phone and send it to the TV. For regular viewing, though, a player installed on the Apple TV itself is smoother, because the stream goes directly to the TV rather than through your phone. See our iPhone and iPad guide for mobile viewing.
Apple TV troubleshooting
Channels load but the guide is empty
With an M3U playlist, the guide needs its own EPG link. Add it in the player’s settings and refresh. With Xtream Codes, refresh the guide from the player’s settings. See TV guide (EPG) problems.
The picture flickers or switches black between programmes
That’s the TV changing mode as Match Content switches between HDR and SDR or between frame rates. It’s normal and lasts a second. If it’s frequent and annoying, turn off Match Frame Rate and keep Match Dynamic Range on.
Buffering in the evening
Use Ethernet if your model has it, or move the router closer. Test your speed with a speed-test app on the Apple TV itself, then follow the buffering and freezing guide.
The app keeps asking for the login again
Some players store logins in iCloud. Make sure you’re signed in to the same Apple Account in Settings → Users and Accounts, and that the player is up to date.
