How the pieces fit
| Piece | Job |
|---|---|
| Your IPTV provider | Supplies the M3U playlist and XMLTV guide |
| Threadfin or Dispatcharr | Reads the playlist and guide, filters channels, and presents them to Plex as a network tuner |
| Plex Media Server | Adds the “tuner”, maps the guide and offers Live TV and DVR (with Plex Pass) |
| Plex apps | Watch on TVs, phones and computers |
Setup overview
- Run a proxy. Threadfin describes itself as an M3U proxy for Plex, Jellyfin and Emby based on xTeVe; Dispatcharr is a fuller stream and guide manager that can also output an HDHomeRun-style tuner. Both run in Docker.
- Load your M3U and XMLTV into the proxy, and choose the channels you want. Plex tuners work best with a trimmed list.
- In Plex, add a DVR/tuner. The proxy should be discovered on your network, or you can enter its address.
- Map the guide. Use the XMLTV guide from the proxy so channels line up.
- Watch from the Live TV section in any Plex app.
Things to know
- Plex Pass: Plex’s support pages say Live TV and DVR require it, and that recording is a premium feature.
- Channel limits: tuner-style setups make you pick channels; a smaller, curated list is easier to manage.
- Your server does the work: remote streaming and transcoding load your Plex server’s processor and upload bandwidth.
Alternatives
If you want IPTV in a media server without the proxy step, Jellyfin accepts M3U playlists natively; see Jellyfin IPTV. For a direct comparison, see Plex vs Jellyfin for IPTV.
