Four legal ways to watch TV from home
- Broadcasters’ own apps. Many broadcasters publish official apps in the UK app stores. They’re the safest starting point, but each decides what it can show in the UK. Check the publisher name on the listing, because many apps use channel names without being official.
- Channels made for viewers abroad. Some public broadcasters run international channels and stream them free worldwide, such as TVP Polonia for Polish viewers and TVR Internațional for Romanians.
- UK TV platform add-ons. Some UK satellite, cable and IPTV platforms sell international channel packs, particularly South Asian channels, with a proper guide on the main TV.
- Streaming services sold internationally. Several big streaming services from India, Pakistan, the Arab world and Türkiye sell plans to UK viewers through their apps.
Rules that apply to every language
- TV licence. Watching any channel live in the UK needs a TV licence, whatever the country or language. See IPTV and the TV licence.
- Rights are territorial. A licensed app from abroad may block live channels, films or sport in the UK. That’s the service following its licences.
- No EU portability. Since 1 January 2021, EU rules that let subscribers use home services while temporarily abroad no longer apply to the UK.
- Sport is sold by country. Live football and cricket are the most tightly restricted. “Every match for a few pounds” is the classic sign of an unlicensed service; see is IPTV legal?.
Getting international channels to work well
- Guide times. Channels from other time zones often show the wrong times after the UK changes its clocks. Our EPG offset calculator works out the setting.
- Scripts and right-to-left text. Arabic, Urdu, Persian and Indian scripts need fonts and right-to-left support in the player. If text shows as boxes, update the app or try another player.
- Audio tracks and subtitles. Films often carry several language tracks; switch them from the player’s playback menu. If a channel is silent, see no sound on IPTV.
