Legal ways to watch Romanian TV in the UK
TVR Internațional: the public channel for Romanians abroad
TVR Internațional (TVRi) is the international channel of Televiziunea Română, the public broadcaster. It’s made for Romanians living outside Romania, with news, current affairs and entertainment, and it streams live on TVR+, TVR’s own platform at tvrplus.ro. It also broadcasts free-to-air by satellite across Europe.
Use the official TVR+ website rather than a third-party app: an app called “TVR+” in the UK App Store is published by a technology company, and we couldn’t confirm it as TVR’s own.
Commercial broadcasters’ apps
| App | Publisher | What to expect in the UK |
|---|---|---|
| AntenaPLAY | Antena TV Group SA | Antena’s streaming service; check its rules for viewing from abroad |
| Antena 1 | Antena TV Group SA | Antena 1 programmes and clips; live content depends on rights |
| Voyo.ro | PRO TV SA | PRO TV’s subscription streaming service; check availability outside Romania |
Why Romanian subscriptions show less in the UK
Romanian broadcasters license most programmes, films and sport for Romania. The EU’s portability rules, which let subscribers use home services while temporarily in another EU country, stopped applying to the UK on 1 January 2021, according to the UK government, and they never covered people who live abroad. So reduced catalogues or blocked live channels in the UK are normal for licensed services.
You still need a UK TV licence
According to TV Licensing, you need a UK licence to watch or record live TV on any channel, including channels from outside the UK, on any device. That includes watching TVR Internațional live. See IPTV and the TV licence.
Setting up Romanian channels in an IPTV player
- Guide times. Romania is two hours ahead of the UK all year. If listings are exactly two hours out, the guide’s time zone isn’t being applied; set a time shift in the player. Our EPG offset calculator helps, and EPG not loading covers empty guides.
- Romanian characters. Letters such as ă, â, î, ș and ț should display correctly. If they don’t, the playlist or guide file has an encoding problem; see editing an M3U playlist.
- Picture and sound. For channels that stutter at peak times, see IPTV buffering.
Before you pay for Romanian channels
- Start with TVR Internațional and the official apps.
- Check who you’re paying, with a business name, terms and a refund policy.
- Be wary of every Romanian channel, including premium sport, for a few pounds. See is IPTV legal?.
