Getting started

How to set up IPTV on any device

Setting up IPTV is the same five steps on any device: know which kind of login you have, choose a player app your device supports, install it, add your login and TV guide, then adjust a couple of settings. Most people finish in ten to fifteen minutes. This guide covers the steps that apply everywhere, with links to device-specific instructions.

Step 1: check which login you have

Your provider sends one or more of these:

You receivedIt’s calledWorks with
Server address, username and passwordXtream Codes loginMost modern player apps
One long web linkM3U playlistAlmost every player, including Smart TV apps and VLC
A portal address, and a request for your device’s MAC addressPortal (MAC) loginMAG boxes, StbEmu, Formuler

If you have both an Xtream Codes login and an M3U link, use the Xtream Codes login where your app supports it. Xtream Codes vs M3U explains why.

Step 2: choose a player app your device supports

A player app plays the subscription you add to it. Popular choices by device:

DeviceGood starting points
Fire TV (Fire OS)TiviMate, IPTV Smarters
Android TV and Google TVTiviMate, IPTV Smarters and other Google Play players
Samsung and LG Smart TVsSmart IPTV, SmartOne and other players in the TV’s app store
Apple TV, iPhone and iPadApp Store players such as IPTVX, UHF and Smarters Player Lite
Windows and MacDesktop players and VLC

Availability differs by model and region; our device guides list what works on each. Only install apps from official stores or the developer’s own website.

Step 3: install the app

  • From an app store: search for the app by name and check the developer name before installing, because look-alike apps exist.
  • From the developer’s website: on Fire TV and some Android devices you may need to allow installs from that source. How to install IPTV on a Firestick shows the steps.

Step 4: add your login and TV guide

  1. Open the app and choose to add a playlist, profile or user.
  2. Pick the matching login type: Xtream Codes (sometimes “Xtream API” or “login with username”), M3U (“playlist URL”) or portal.
  3. Enter the details exactly, including capital letters and the port number. Where possible, type on a phone rather than the TV remote. Xtream Codes login explained shows each field.
  4. Let the channel list load, then load the TV guide. With Xtream Codes it usually loads automatically; with M3U you may need to add the guide address. See how to add an EPG.

Step 5: adjust the settings that matter

  • Stream format: if channels buffer or won’t start, try switching between MPEG-TS and HLS. See HLS vs MPEG-TS.
  • Frame-rate matching: turn it on in your device’s display settings for smooth sport. See frame rates explained.
  • Guide updates: set the TV guide to refresh automatically every day.

FAQ

Setup questions

Do I need a special box for IPTV?

No. A Fire TV Stick, Android TV box, Apple TV, many Smart TVs, phones, tablets and computers can all run IPTV player apps. A dedicated IPTV box is only one option.

Which is easier to set up, Xtream Codes or M3U?

Xtream Codes is usually easier: three short fields rather than one long link, and the TV guide normally loads with it. Use M3U when your app only accepts a playlist.

How long does IPTV take to set up?

Usually ten to fifteen minutes the first time, most of it installing the app and letting the channel list and guide load. Later devices take a few minutes each.
