Why IPTV is harder on Roku
- Closed store only. Roku devices install channels from the Roku Channel Store. There’s no equivalent of Fire TV’s or Android TV’s option to install apps from elsewhere.
- No Android apps. Popular players such as TiviMate and the Android versions of IPTV Smarters can’t run on Roku. See IPTV Smarters on Roku for what works instead.
- Basic players. The M3U players in the store are usually simpler than Android players, with fewer guide and catch-up features.
What does work
| Option | What it’s like | Details |
|---|---|---|
| M3U players in the Roku Channel Store | Load your M3U link; basic guides at best | M3U players on Roku |
| IBO Player | Lists Roku among its compatible devices | IBO Player |
| Screen mirroring or casting | Play on a phone or computer and mirror to the TV | Cast IPTV to a Roku |
| A plug-in stick | Full choice of players on the same TV | Fire TV or Google TV |
Using an M3U player on Roku
- On the Roku home screen, open the Channel Store and search for “M3U” or “IPTV”.
- Read the listing: check the developer, whether it asks for your own playlist, and any subscription it charges.
- Add the channel, open it and enter your M3U link. Typing on the Roku remote is slow; the Roku mobile app’s keyboard helps.
- If your provider only gave you an Xtream Codes login, build the M3U link first; see Xtream Codes to M3U.
Avoid channels that show content before you add a playlist; they’re almost certainly unlicensed.
Roku TVs
On a TV with Roku built in, the same limits apply. The simplest upgrade is a Fire TV Stick or Google TV Streamer in a spare HDMI port. See Roku vs Firestick for IPTV.
