|---|---|---|
| “App not installed” straight away | Low storage, or a conflicting older version | Fixes 1 and 2 |
| “There was a problem parsing the package” | Damaged download, or an app too new for your device | Fixes 3 and 4 |
| No Install button, or a permission prompt | Downloader isn’t allowed to install apps | Fix 5 |
| “App installation blocked … unlicensed content” | Amazon blocks the app | Fix 6 |
1. Free up storage
An app needs room for the installation file and for itself. With 8 GB models, space runs out quickly.
- Delete old installation files in Downloader (its Files section).
- Clear the cache of big apps in SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Uninstall apps you don’t use.
Fire TV storage full walks through each step.
2. Remove the older version first
If the app is already installed from another source, the new copy may be signed differently, and Fire OS refuses to install it over the top.
- Go to SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications, choose the app and Uninstall.
- Install the new copy.
- Add your login again. Where the app offers a backup, save your settings first.
3. Download it again
A download that was interrupted leaves a damaged file. Delete it in Downloader and download it again, ideally on a stable connection.
4. Check the app supports your Fire TV
Apps are built for a minimum Android version. Fire OS 8 is based on Android 11 and Fire OS 7 on Android 9, and very old sticks run Fire OS 5 or 6. An app built for a newer version fails with a parse error. Check the developer’s requirements, or use a version they publish for older devices. Which Fire TV do I have? shows your Fire OS version.
5. Give Downloader permission
Open SettingsMy Fire TVDeveloper optionsInstall unknown apps and switch Downloader on. If Developer options is hidden, see how to show it.
6. Amazon has blocked the app
Since early 2026, Fire TV blocks apps that Amazon identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, and says it offers no workarounds. Choose another player. See why Amazon now blocks some apps.
On Vega OS devices
If your Fire TV runs Vega OS, apps from outside the Appstore can’t be installed at all. See Vega OS explained.
