1. Check the Wi-Fi signal the stick actually gets
Open SettingsMy Fire TVAboutNetwork. It shows the network you’re connected to and the signal strength. Anything below “Very Good” on a stick used for live TV is worth improving.
- Use the HDMI extender that comes in the box, so the stick sits away from the back of the TV. The TV’s metal back blocks Wi-Fi.
- Connect to the 5 GHz network if your router shows it separately (often with “5G” in the name). It’s faster and less crowded over a short distance.
- Move the router out of cupboards and away from the floor if you can.
2. Go wired if you can
Amazon’s Ethernet adapter plugs into the stick’s power socket and adds a network port. It runs at up to 100 Mbps, which is well above what one 4K stream needs, and it takes Wi-Fi out of the equation. The Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) has a port built in. Fire TV Ethernet adapters covers the options.
3. Free memory and storage
Sticks with 1 or 2 GB of memory slow down when many apps run in the background, and every model slows down when storage is nearly full.
- Restart the stick: SettingsMy Fire TVRestart.
- Clear the IPTV app’s cache (not its data) in SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Uninstall apps you don’t use. Fire TV storage full has the details.
4. Change the player’s stream settings
- Switch the stream format between MPEG-TS and HLS. See HLS vs MPEG-TS.
- Try a medium or larger buffer if your player offers a buffer-size option.
- Try another player engine in the app, where there’s a choice.
5. Check it isn’t the stick overheating
If buffering or freezing starts after 30 to 60 minutes and gets worse, the stick may be too hot. Keep it on the extender, away from the TV’s vents. Fire TV overheating explains the signs.
6. Rule out the broadband and the service
Play the same channel on a phone using mobile data. If it buffers there too, the problem isn’t your Fire TV. Carry on with the general IPTV buffering guide, which covers broadband, evening congestion and server problems.
Is your Fire TV up to the job?
Older and HD-only sticks struggle with 4K channels and very large channel lists. If you see buffering mainly on 4K, see which Fire TV is best for IPTV.
