Amazon Fire TV

Firestick Ethernet adapter

Fire TV Sticks have no network port, so they rely on Wi-Fi unless you add an adapter. Amazon’s own Ethernet adapter sits between the stick and its power supply and adds a cable connection. For live TV on a stick that struggles with Wi-Fi, it’s the most effective fix you can buy. Here’s which one fits your model.

Why a cable helps

A stick tucked behind the TV gets a weak Wi-Fi signal, and live TV can’t pause to catch up the way on-demand video can. A cable gives the stick a steady connection that neighbours’ networks, walls and the TV’s metal back can’t disturb. If you’ve worked through Firestick buffering and the signal is still the problem, this is the next step.

How to set it up

  1. Unplug the stick’s power cable from the stick.
  2. Plug the adapter into the stick’s power port, and plug the stick’s power adapter into the Ethernet adapter. Amazon says the Fire TV’s own power adapter can power it.
  3. Run an Ethernet cable from your router to the adapter.
  4. Turn on the stick. It switches to the wired connection. Check under SettingsNetwork, and press Play/Pause there to run the network status tool.

Third-party adapters exist too, including gigabit models. Any of them is faster than a single stream needs; Amazon’s own adapter is the one Amazon lists as compatible with each model.

FAQ

Ethernet adapter questions

Is a 10/100 Mbps adapter fast enough for 4K?

Yes. A 4K stream needs around 25 Mbps, well within 100 Mbps. What matters for live TV is a steady connection, and a cable gives you that.

Which Ethernet adapter do I need for my Firestick?

Most Fire TV Sticks use micro-USB power and take Amazon’s micro-USB Ethernet adapter. Amazon says the Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen) has USB-C and needs its USB-C Ethernet adapter instead.

Does the Fire TV Cube need an adapter?

The Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) has an Ethernet port built in. Amazon lists the Cube among the devices its micro-USB adapter works with, which applies to earlier models.
