Cache, data or uninstall: which one?
| Action | What it removes | Your login | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary files: images, thumbnails, some guide data | Kept | An app is slow, freezes or shows old information |
| Clear data | Everything the app has stored, including settings | Removed: you sign in again | Clearing the cache didn’t help, or the app won’t start |
| Uninstall | The app and all its data | Removed | You don’t use the app, or you’re reinstalling a fresh copy |
Before clearing data in an IPTV player, note your login: server address, username and password, or your M3U link. You’ll need to enter it again.
Clear the cache for one app
- Open SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Select the app.
- Select Clear Cache.
- Open the app again. The first start can take a little longer while it rebuilds its files.
Clear every app’s cache at once
- Open SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Select Clear all Application Caches, then Confirm.
This is the quickest way to free space when the stick warns that storage is low. For more ways to free space, see Fire TV storage full.
Clear an app’s data
- Open SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Select the app, then Clear Cache, then Clear Data.
- Open the app and set it up again, including your login.
Delete (uninstall) an app
- Open SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications.
- Select the app you want to remove.
- Select Uninstall and follow the on-screen steps.
Good candidates to remove: players you tried and don’t use, apps from unknown developers, and installer files left behind by Downloader. Downloader can delete its own downloaded files; see the Downloader app.
When clearing doesn’t fix it
- The app still freezes: restart the stick by holding Select and Play/Pause for about five seconds, then try again. See Firestick not working.
- Video buffers: the cache is rarely the cause. See Firestick buffering.
- An app won’t install afterwards: see app not installed. Amazon also blocks some apps outright; see blocked apps on Fire TV.
