Start here: restart the stick
Many faults clear with a restart, so try this first whatever the symptom:
- With the remote: hold Select and Play/Pause together for about five seconds.
- From the menu: SettingsMy Fire TVRestart.
- Without the remote: unplug the stick’s power for a few seconds, then plug it back in.
Find your symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing on screen, or “no signal” | Wrong input, HDMI handshake or resolution | No picture |
| The remote does nothing | Batteries, pairing or distance | Remote not working |
| “Unable to connect” or no networks listed | Wi-Fi | No Wi-Fi |
| “Home is currently unavailable” | The stick can’t reach Amazon | Home unavailable |
| Apps crash, freeze or load slowly | Cache, storage or memory | Apps misbehaving |
| Video keeps stopping to load | Connection speed or Wi-Fi strength | Buffering |
| Voices don’t match lips | Audio delay | Sound out of sync |
| “App installation blocked” | Amazon’s app blocking | Blocked apps |
| No power light, or stuck on the logo | Power supply or a stuck update | Won’t start |
No picture or a black screen
- Check the input. Use the TV’s own remote to select the HDMI input the stick is plugged into.
- Check the connection. Plug the stick firmly into the TV, using the HDMI extender if it came with one, and try another HDMI port.
- Reset HDMI-CEC. If you can see the menu at all, open SettingsDisplay & SoundsHDMI-CEC Device Control and turn it off and on again.
- Cycle the resolution. Hold Up and Rewind together for five seconds. The stick steps through the resolutions it supports; let it reach one your TV shows.
The remote doesn’t respond
- Replace the batteries with fresh AAA alkaline batteries.
- Check what’s wrong. If the LED at the top of the remote flashes when you press the Alexa button, it supports troubleshooting mode: hold Rewind and Right for three seconds, press Menu, then press any button. The LED colour points to the fault; slow red blinking means low batteries.
- Re-pair or reset it. Hold Home for about 10 seconds to pair, or reset it with Left, Menu and Back held for 12 seconds. Full steps: pair a Firestick remote.
- Use your phone as a remote in the meantime: Fire TV remote app.
It won’t connect to Wi-Fi
- Run the network check. Open SettingsNetwork and press Play/Pause to open Amazon’s network status tool.
- Restart both ends. Unplug the Fire TV for 10 seconds, and restart your router.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and on in SettingsNetwork.
- Forget and rejoin the network. In SettingsNetwork, highlight your network, press Menu to forget it, then connect again with the password.
- Improve the signal. Move the router or use the HDMI extender, and prefer the 5 GHz network. See Wi-Fi or Ethernet for IPTV.
Apps crash, freeze or won’t open
- Clear the app’s cache: SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications, select the app, then Clear Cache. Full guide: clear cache and delete apps.
- Free up space if the stick warns about storage: Fire TV storage full.
- Update the app and the stick, then restart.
- Clear the app’s data as a last step; you’ll need to sign in to it again.
Video keeps buffering
Buffering is almost always the connection, not the stick. Work through Firestick buffering, and for IPTV the full buffering checklist.
Sound is out of sync
Open SettingsDisplay & SoundsAudioAV Sync Tuning and adjust until the on-screen ball and the sound match. If you use a home cinema system, Amazon says to use Lip Sync Tuning instead. In an IPTV player, switching the player’s video engine can also fix it.
An app is blocked or won’t install
Since February 2026 Fire OS blocks apps that Amazon identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, and Amazon offers no workaround. Sticks running Vega OS can only install from the Amazon Appstore at all. See blocked apps on Fire TV and app not installed.
It won’t turn on or gets stuck on the logo
Use the power adapter that came with the stick, plugged into a wall socket rather than the TV’s USB port, and try another socket. If it starts but stays on the Fire TV logo, give it several minutes, then unplug it for a minute and try again. See Firestick won’t turn on.
Last resort: factory reset
A factory reset removes your Amazon account from the stick and deletes everything downloaded, including in-app purchases, so try everything above first.
- With the remote: hold Back and the right side of the navigation circle together for 10 seconds.
- From the menu: SettingsMy Fire TVReset to Factory Defaults.
When it finishes, pair the remote and set the stick up again: see set up a Firestick.
