Amazon Fire TV

How to set up a Fire TV Stick

Setting up a Fire TV Stick takes about ten minutes. You’ll need your Wi-Fi password and your Amazon account details, and the stick walks you through the rest on screen. Here’s each step, what can go wrong, and the settings worth changing before you install any apps.

What you need

Amazon lists these before you start:

  • The stick and what came in the box: Alexa Voice Remote, USB cable, power adapter, AAA batteries and usually an HDMI extender.
  • A TV with a free HDMI port.
  • An Amazon account: your email address or phone number and password. You can create one during setup.
  • Your Wi-Fi name and password.

Connect the stick

1

Put the batteries in the remote

Turn the remote over, press on the back cover and slide it down. Use AAA alkaline batteries.

2

Connect the power

Plug the USB cable into the power adapter and the stick. Plug the adapter into the wall. Amazon advises against powering the stick from the TV’s USB port.

3

Plug the stick into the TV

Use a free HDMI port. If the stick won’t fit, or the port is behind the TV, use the HDMI extender: it also improves Wi-Fi by moving the stick away from the TV’s metal back.

4

Switch to the right input

Turn the TV on and use the TV’s own remote to choose the HDMI input the stick is in.

Follow the on-screen setup

5

Pair the remote

The remote usually pairs by itself. If it doesn’t, hold Home until “Press [play] to start” appears, which takes about 10 seconds. See pair a Firestick remote if that fails.

6

Connect to Wi-Fi

Scan the QR code with your phone to set up Wi-Fi automatically, or choose your network with the remote and type the password. Pick your router’s 5 GHz network if it shows one separately.

7

Sign in to Amazon

Scan the on-screen QR code, or go to amazon.com/code on a phone or computer and enter the code shown on the TV.

8

Set up TV control

Answer the on-screen questions so the remote can control your TV’s power and volume, and a soundbar if you have one. You can change this later under SettingsEquipment Control.

First things to do after setup

  1. Check for updates: SettingsMy Fire TVAbout and look for an update option. See update a Firestick.
  2. Check which model and system you have on the same About screen. Sticks running Vega OS can only install apps from the Amazon Appstore; see which Fire TV do I have.
  3. Turn on frame-rate matching for smooth live TV: SettingsDisplay & SoundsDisplayMatch Original Frame Rate.
  4. Install your apps. For IPTV, follow install an IPTV player on Firestick.

If setup goes wrong

  • Login error or forgotten password: reset your Amazon password from Amazon’s sign-in page, then try again.
  • Remote won’t pair: see pair a Firestick remote.
  • Can’t find your network or connect: see the Wi-Fi steps in Firestick not working. Problems with the Wi-Fi password itself are for your broadband provider.
  • Can’t download apps: Amazon says to add a default payment method to your account.
  • No picture at all: see the blank-screen steps in Firestick not working.

FAQ

Firestick setup questions

Do I need an Amazon account to set up a Firestick?

Yes. Setup asks you to sign in or create an Amazon account, either by scanning a QR code or by entering a code at amazon.com/code on a phone or computer.

Can I power a Firestick from the TV’s USB port?

Amazon says to plug the power adapter into the wall and avoid plugging the USB cable directly into the TV. A TV’s USB port often can’t supply enough power, which causes restarts and warnings.

Why won’t my Firestick connect to Wi-Fi during setup?

Check the password, move the router or the stick closer, and use the HDMI extender so the stick isn’t hidden behind the TV. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps are in our Firestick not working guide.

Do I need a Prime membership?

Amazon’s setup page asks for an Amazon account, not a Prime membership. Prime matters only for Prime Video content.
