The quickest way: the About screen
- Press the Home button on the remote.
- Open SettingsMy Fire TVAbout.
- The first line shows the device name, for example “Fire TV Stick 4K Max”, sometimes with the generation.
- Scroll down to see the software version: a Fire OS version, or a Vega OS version.
On some screens, Settings is the gear icon at the right of the top menu.
What the answer means for IPTV
| What the About screen shows | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Fire OS 8 (4K Max 2nd gen, 4K 2nd gen, 4K Plus) | Install most IPTV players, including from the developer’s download link; 4K and AV1 supported |
| Fire OS 7 (Cube 3rd gen, 4K Max 1st gen, HD 2024, 3rd-gen stick, Lite) | Install most IPTV players; the HD and Lite models output up to 1080p |
| Fire OS 6 or 5 (older models) | Many current players no longer support these; consider an upgrade |
| Vega OS (4K Select, HD 2026) | Only apps from the Amazon Appstore; see Vega OS explained |
The full specifications of each model are in the Fire TV model comparison.
Other ways to tell
- The box or order history. Your Amazon order names the exact model.
- The Fire TV mobile app lists the device by name once it’s paired.
- The label on the device has a model code. It identifies the hardware, but the name on the About screen is easier to use.
Two models with the same name
There are two Fire TV Stick HD models: the 2024 one runs Fire OS 7, and the 2026 one runs Vega OS. If you have an HD stick, check the software version on the About screen rather than relying on the name.
Next steps
- On Fire OS: install an IPTV player.
- On Vega OS: see your options on Vega OS.
