Show Developer options
- Press Home and open SettingsMy Fire TV.
- If you see Developer options, skip to the next section.
- If not, choose About.
- Highlight the first line (your device name) and press Select seven times. A message says you’re now a developer.
- Press Back. Developer options now appears in the My Fire TV menu.
Allow one app to install others
- Open SettingsMy Fire TVDeveloper options.
- Choose Install unknown apps.
- Switch on the app you’ll install from, usually Downloader.
On older Fire OS versions the option is a single switch called Apps from Unknown Sources. It does the same job for all apps at once.
Other options in the same menu
- ADB debugging lets a computer connect to the Fire TV for developer tools. Leave it off unless you know you need it.
Switch it off again
Go back to Install unknown apps and switch the app off. Apps you’ve already installed keep working; you’ll only need the permission again to install an update manually.
If the steps don’t match your screen
- No Developer options even after the seven presses: check whether your device runs Vega OS in the About screen; see Vega OS explained.
- The menu names differ slightly: Amazon changes wording between software versions; look for the same options under My Fire TV or Device & Software.
