How to check your device
Open SettingsMy Fire TVAbout. A Vega OS device shows a Vega OS version (Amazon’s specifications list it as “OS 1.1”). A Fire OS device shows a Fire OS version, such as Fire OS 8. Which Fire TV do I have? shows the other ways to tell.
What Vega OS means for IPTV
- Appstore only. You can only install apps that Amazon lists in the Appstore for your device. There’s no “install unknown apps” option and no Downloader-style installs.
- Most IPTV players aren’t available. Popular players such as TiviMate are distributed through Google Play and the developer’s own site, not the Amazon Appstore.
- Amazon says so at the point of sale. TechRadar reported Amazon warning buyers of the new Fire TV Stick HD that it prevents sideloading.
Your options on a Vega OS device
- Search the Appstore for an IPTV or M3U player that accepts your login type. Check the developer name and reviews carefully, and avoid apps that come with channels built in.
- Use your TV’s own apps if it’s a Smart TV. See IPTV on a smart TV.
- Use a Fire OS stick or an Android TV device for the widest choice. The best Fire TV for IPTV lists the Fire OS models, and Google TV devices are an alternative. Firestick alternatives compares the main options.
Amazon also blocks some apps on Fire OS devices; that’s a separate change, explained in Amazon blocking apps on Fire TV.
