The Downloader app on Fire TV: install, use and fix errors

Downloader is a free app from AFTVnews that lets a Fire TV download files from the web, including app installation files published by developers. It’s in the Amazon Appstore and is one of the most installed apps on Fire TV. Used with links from developers you trust, it’s the standard way to install players that aren’t in the Appstore.

Install Downloader

  1. On the Fire TV home screen, choose Find and search for Downloader.
  2. Choose the app with the orange icon published by AFTVnews.
  3. Choose Get or Download, then Open.
  4. Allow access to files and media if it asks.

Allow Downloader to install apps

Fire OS asks for permission per app. Open SettingsMy Fire TVDeveloper optionsInstall unknown apps and switch Downloader on. If Developer options is missing, here’s how to show it.

Using Downloader

The home screen has one box, labelled for a URL, search term or code.

  • Enter a web address the developer publishes, for example the address of their app’s download page or file.
  • Or enter a Downloader code, a short number the developer publishes that stands in for the address.

When the file downloads, Downloader offers Install. After installing, choose Delete to remove the installation file and free up space.

Downloader also has a simple web browser, which can load the developer’s download page if they publish a page rather than a direct file.

Use it safely

  • Only use codes and links that come from the developer’s own website. Look-alike sites imitate well-known players, and codes shared on social media can point anywhere.
  • Don’t install apps that come with channels built in. A player should ask you to add your own subscription.
  • Switch the install permission off again when you’re done, if you want the extra safety.

FAQ

Downloader questions

Is the Downloader app safe?

Downloader itself is a well-known app from AFTVnews, available in the Amazon Appstore and Google Play. What you download with it is the risk: only enter codes and addresses that come from the developer of the app you want.

What are Downloader codes?

Short numbers that stand in for web addresses, so you don’t have to type a long link with the remote. Developers publish codes for their own downloads; TiviMate, for example, lists code 272483 on its website.

Does Downloader work on Vega OS Fire TVs?

No. Vega OS devices only install apps from the Appstore, so Downloader-based installs don’t apply to them.
