Troubleshooting

IPTV app keeps crashing or closing: how to fix it

When an IPTV app closes on its own, freezes on its loading screen or drops back to the home screen mid-channel, the cause is usually on the device: an out-of-date app, a corrupted cache, too little free storage, or a playlist and TV guide too large for the device’s memory. Work through the fixes below in order. They start with the quickest and keep your settings until the last step.

Before you start

Note when it crashes: on launch, while the playlist or guide loads, or on particular channels. That points to the fix:

Fixes, in order

1. Restart the device properly

Turning a TV or stick off with the remote often only puts it to sleep. Restart it from its settings menu, or unplug it from the power for 30 seconds. Google’s Android help also starts with a restart.

2. Update the app and the device

Install the latest version of the app from your device’s store, and check for a system update. Google’s guidance for apps that aren’t working lists both.

3. Force stop the app

This closes the app completely so it starts fresh:

  • Android phones and tablets, Android TV and Google TV: in Settings, open the apps list, select the app and choose Force stop. The exact menu names vary by device.
  • Fire TV: SettingsApplicationsManage Installed Applications, select the app, then Force stop.

4. Clear the cache

In the same app screen, choose Clear cache. This removes temporary files and keeps your login and settings. Google notes that clearing cached data only frees space for a while, because the cache builds up again.

5. Free up memory and storage

  • Uninstall apps you don’t use, especially other streaming apps running in the background.
  • Make the playlist lighter. Hide channel groups you never watch and reduce the number of TV guide days, if your player offers those settings.
  • Check free storage. On Android TV, see Android TV storage full.

6. Clear the app’s data

This resets the app to how it was when first installed. You lose your login, favourites and settings, so have your login details ready. Use it when the cache step hasn’t helped.

7. Uninstall and reinstall

The last resort. Google warns that any data saved in the app is erased. Install it again from the official store or the developer’s own site, never from a copy found elsewhere.

If it still crashes

Try a second player with the same login. If the second app runs smoothly, the first app is the problem: contact its developer with your device model and app version. If every app struggles, the device itself may be too old or too full for your playlist; see choosing a box for IPTV.

FAQ

App crash questions

Will clearing the cache delete my playlist?

No. Clearing the cache removes temporary files, such as downloaded guide data and images. Clearing the app’s data, or uninstalling it, removes your login and settings, so you’ll need to add them again.

Why does the app crash only when the TV guide loads?

A full guide for a large playlist can need more memory than a budget stick has. Hide channel groups you don’t watch, shorten the number of guide days, or load the guide from a smaller source if your player allows it.

Why did the app start crashing after an update?

Sometimes an update doesn’t sit well with data saved by the old version. Clearing the cache usually fixes it; if not, clear the app’s data and add your login again.
