Black screen with sound
The stream is arriving, because you can hear it, but the video can’t be decoded or displayed.
1. The device can’t decode the video codec
4K channels, and some HD ones, use HEVC (H.265). Devices without hardware HEVC decoding play the audio and leave the picture black. Try the HD version of the channel. If that plays, the device is the limit. See codec not supported.
2. HDR the setup can’t show
A channel or film in HDR sent to a TV or HDMI port that doesn’t handle it can show black or very dark. Check the streaming device’s display settings: set dynamic range to “SDR” or “auto”, and make sure the TV’s HDMI port has its enhanced or HDR mode enabled if the TV has one.
3. HDCP and the HDMI connection
Protected 4K video needs an HDCP 2.2 handshake between the device and the TV. A cheap HDMI cable, an old extender, a switch or an AV receiver in the middle can break it, giving black on 4K and a picture on HD. Plug the device directly into the TV with a good cable and try another HDMI port. HDCP errors explains more.
4. Switch the player engine
Some apps have a black picture in one player engine and a normal one in another. Try the alternative player in the app’s settings.
Black screen without sound
Nothing is playing, so the problem is earlier in the chain: the stream isn’t starting.
- Try another channel. If none play, see channels not loading.
- Wait ten seconds. Some channels take a moment to start, especially on slower connections. A permanent black screen with no spinner often means the app gave up without an error message.
- Switch the stream format between MPEG-TS and HLS in the app’s settings.
- Test on mobile data. If it plays there, your home network or broadband provider is involved. Start with how to stop IPTV buffering.
The whole TV is black
If the TV shows no picture from the streaming device at all, not even its menus, the problem is the HDMI connection or the TV’s input setting, not IPTV. Check the input source, reseat the HDMI cable and restart both devices.
