Android TV storage full? Free up space

Streaming devices have limited storage, and IPTV players add channel lists, logos and several days of TV guide on top of the system and your other apps. When space runs low, apps slow down, crash or refuse to update. Google’s own steps free space quickly on Google TV and Android TV. Here they are, plus the IPTV-specific habits that stop it filling up again.

Google TV: Google’s two quick fixes

These steps are from Google’s help for the Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer; other Google TV devices use similar menus.

Clear cached data for every app at once:

  1. Select your profile icon, then Settings.
  2. Open SystemStorageInternal shared storageCached data.
  3. Select OK.

Google notes that this only removes temporary data and you stay signed in to your apps.

Uninstall apps you don’t use:

  1. Select your profile icon, then Settings.
  2. Open AppsSee all apps, choose an app, select Uninstall, then OK.

Android TV with the older menus

On Android TV devices with the classic settings, storage is under SettingsDeviceStorage and reset. Google’s Android TV help explains adding a USB drive there:

Set the drive up asWhat it means
Internal storageAdds space to the device; you can’t move that data anywhere else
Removable storageYou can move content to another device; apps and games can’t be moved to it

Android TV only supports FAT-formatted drives, and formatting erases what’s on the drive. To move an app, Google’s steps are SettingsDeviceApps, select the app, choose Storage used, then pick the USB drive. Always eject the drive under Storage and reset before unplugging it; apps stored on it stop working once it’s removed.

Keep IPTV players lean

  • Load fewer TV guide days. Two or three days is plenty for most people. See how to add an EPG.
  • Hide channel groups you never watch, so the player stores and scrolls less. See how to edit an IPTV playlist.
  • Record to USB storage, not the internal memory, if your player records.
  • Use one player. Two players with the same playlist keep two copies of everything.
  • Clear one app’s cache from its page under Apps when it misbehaves; avoid clearing its data unless you’re ready to add your login again.

If space keeps running out

A device with more storage solves it for good. The Google TV Streamer, for example, has 32 GB, according to 9to5Google’s report of its specifications. See Google TV Streamer for IPTV and how to choose an Android TV box. If the device is slow as well as full, work through IPTV box not working or freezing.

FAQ

Storage questions

Does clearing cached data log me out of my apps?

No. Google says clearing the app cache only removes temporary data, and you’ll remain signed in to your apps. Clearing an app’s data is different: it resets that app, including your IPTV login.

How do I clear the cache for all apps on Google TV?

On Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer: profile icon > Settings > System > Storage > Internal shared storage > Cached data, then OK.

Can I add a USB drive to an Android TV?

On many Android TV devices, yes. Google’s Android TV help explains setting a USB drive up as internal storage (you can’t move its data elsewhere) or removable storage (apps and games can’t be moved to it). Android TV only supports FAT-formatted drives, and formatting erases the drive.
