The menu paths below are from Google’s help for the Chromecast with Google TV and the Google TV Streamer; other Google TV and Android TV devices use similar menus.
1. Fix the connection first
Google’s connection advice for its streaming devices:
- Use the 5 GHz band. If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, put the streaming device on 5 GHz.
- Move closer. Google suggests having the router within 20 feet of the streaming device.
- Use Ethernet if you can. A cable gives a direct connection and takes the load off your Wi-Fi. The Google TV Streamer has a port built in; the Chromecast with Google TV needs Google’s Ethernet adapter, sold separately.
- Move the device away from the TV, which can interfere with its Wi-Fi; an HDMI extender helps.
See Wi-Fi or Ethernet for IPTV and Wi-Fi bands for IPTV.
2. Restart and update
- Check for updates to the device’s software.
- Restart the device: SettingsSystemRestart, or unplug the power for a minute.
- Restart the router, following its maker’s instructions.
Update the IPTV player from Google Play too; old versions can struggle with newer streams.
3. Free up storage
A device that’s almost full gets slow, and the TV guide needs space. Google’s quick fix clears cached data for every app at once: open your profile, then Settings, then SystemStorageInternal shared storageCached data, and select OK. Google notes you stay signed in to your apps. Then uninstall apps you don’t use. More in Android TV storage full.
4. Check the display settings
If the picture stutters rather than stops to load, Google’s video-quality steps point at the display chain:
- Lower the resolution to test: SettingsDisplay & soundResolution, for example from 4K to 1080p.
- Turn off HDR formats your TV supports, to test: SettingsDisplay & SoundAdvanced display settingsFormat selection, choose Manual, then switch formats off.
- Check the TV’s motion compensation mode, and try it on and off.
- Check the HDMI cable and port: for 4K, a cable and port that support it. Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for the Google TV Streamer.
For smooth motion on UK channels, also use frame-rate matching; see frame rates explained.
5. Tune the player
- Raise the buffer if your player has a setting for it. See TiviMate buffering.
- Switch the stream format between HLS and MPEG-TS if your player or provider offers both. See HLS vs MPEG-TS.
- Load fewer guide days to reduce the work the device does.
Still buffering?
If other devices on the same connection also buffer, the cause is upstream: work through IPTV buffering and internet speed for IPTV. If only this device struggles after all of the above, it may simply be underpowered; see how to choose an Android TV box.
