The checklist
| What to check | Why it matters for IPTV | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Google certification | Play Protect, Google Play, security updates and reliable apps | “Google TV” or “Android TV” certified, with Google Play preinstalled |
| Memory (RAM) | Big channel lists and the guide stay responsive | 2 GB minimum; 4 GB is comfortable |
| Storage | Room for players, guide data and some recording | 16 GB or more |
| Ethernet | The steadiest connection for live TV | A built-in port, ideally gigabit |
| Codecs | 4K channels use HEVC; some streams use AV1 | HEVC hardware decoding; AV1 on newer chips |
| Frame-rate switching | Smooth 25 and 50 fps UK channels | Auto frame rate support |
| Updates | Security and app compatibility | A brand with a track record of updates |
For how the chips compare, see streaming box chipsets.
Boxes worth considering
- Google TV Streamer: 4 GB memory, 32 GB storage, gigabit Ethernet and Google TV.
- Nvidia Shield TV Pro: older but still updated in 2026, with gigabit Ethernet and AI upscaling.
- Formuler: IPTV-focused boxes with their own player, MyTVOnline; the newest Z12 Ultra has 4 GB memory, 128 GB storage and gigabit Ethernet, and runs MyTVOnline 4.
- Enthusiast brands such as Homatics, Ugoos and Zidoo, for people who want advanced video settings. See enthusiast boxes.
Boxes to avoid
- Unbranded boxes with vague model names and headline specs that seem too good for the price.
- Boxes sold as “fully loaded”, “unlocked” or with free channels. They’re a legal risk, and the FBI’s 2025 warning about the BADBOX 2.0 botnet specifically flagged generic streaming boxes advertised this way. See Android TV box malware.
- Boxes that ask you to disable Google Play Protect.
Certified or uncertified?
Uncertified boxes run Android without Google’s approval. They may lack Google Play, the security checks and the video protection some apps need. Certified vs uncertified boxes explains how to tell and why it matters.
A box or a stick?
A good stick, such as a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, is cheaper and very capable, but most sticks lack a built-in Ethernet port and have less storage. Firestick vs Android TV box compares them side by side.
