Is StbEmu the right app?
StbEmu suits one situation: your provider gave you a portal address and links your account to a MAC address, the way MAG boxes work, and you want to use it on an Android device. If you have an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login, StbEmu isn’t the right tool: its listing says it doesn’t support playlists. See Stalker portals explained and Xtream Codes vs M3U.
The developer’s own note on Google Play is blunt: the app is designed for experienced users, has many settings that must be configured before use, and can stop working if configured wrongly. It points to the documentation at docs.stbemu.com.
Set up a portal profile
StbEmu creates one profile on first start, configured for a demo portal. You change it, or add a profile, for your provider. These steps follow the StbEmu documentation.
- Install StbEmu from Google Play and check the developer is M Vasilchuk.
- Open the menu: double-tap the screen (with a mouse or air remote, click on the screen) and the app’s menu appears. Select Settings, then Profiles, and add or edit a profile.
- Portal URL: under Portal settings, enter the portal address exactly as your provider gave it. The documentation says it must start with a scheme such as
http://. - STB model: under STB configuration, choose the model your provider expects (for example MAG 250). Leave Firmware on Generic unless told otherwise.
- MAC address: also under STB configuration. Most portals expect it to start with
00:1A:79. Give this MAC to your provider so they can register it, or use the one they registered for you. - Restart the app and let the portal load.
The documentation notes that on some Wi-Fi-only devices the generated MAC can be 00:1A:79:00:00:00, because Android doesn’t let the app read the real one. If that happens, change the last part as the documentation describes and give the new MAC to your provider. See MAC address for IPTV.
Choose the media player
Each profile has a Media player setting. The documentation lists Exo as the default and preferred player on most devices, with VLC, MPV, Ijk, Android’s internal player and an external player as alternatives; Ijk and the internal player don’t support subtitles. If a channel stutters or won’t play, try another player in the profile.
Free or Pro?
According to the documentation, the free version shows ads and the Pro version doesn’t, and that’s the only big difference. StbEmu (Pro) cost £4.89 on the UK Play Store when we checked. Try the free version with your portal before paying.
Alternatives
- TiviMate also supports Stalker portals alongside Xtream Codes and M3U, with a TV-style guide. See TiviMate and StbEmu vs TiviMate.
- A MAG box runs the portal natively, with no app to configure. See MAG box vs Android TV box.
- A Formuler box supports portal logins in MyTVOnline. See IPTV on a Formuler box.
- Smart STB does the same job on smart TVs and other devices, with a virtual MAC and a paid licence after a free trial. See Smart STB.
