Network and Wi-Fi

IPTV on UK broadband: BT, Sky, Virgin Media and others

For app-based IPTV, any decent UK broadband works: the app streams over your connection like any other video. Your broadband provider can still affect it in three ways: the network security filter on your account, court-ordered blocks the provider applies to some servers, and the router it supplied. Here’s how each works with the biggest providers, and what to check first.

Other providers offer similar filters. If IPTV works on mobile data but not at home, turn the filter off briefly to test, then adjust it or turn it back on. See IPTV not working on Wi-Fi.

Court-ordered blocks

UK broadband providers apply High Court blocking orders that target specific streaming servers. A blocked server looks exactly like a server that’s down, but only on that provider’s network. These blocks aren’t account settings and can’t be switched off. See ISP blocking in the UK for how they work, and is IPTV legal in the UK for what they say about a service.

The provider’s router

  • Wi-Fi coverage is the most common weak point. Put the TV on 5 GHz, cable the main TV, or add a mesh system. See Wi-Fi bands and mesh Wi-Fi.
  • Settings are often limited on provider routers: some don’t offer QoS or custom DNS. You can usually add your own mesh system or router behind theirs.
  • IPTV mode settings on these routers are for the provider’s own TV service. See what is IPTV mode on a router.

Speed and connection type

Full fibre, fibre-to-the-cabinet and cable broadband all handle IPTV if the speed covers everyone at home at once. See internet speed for IPTV for how much you need and how to test it properly.

FAQ

Broadband provider questions

Which UK broadband is best for IPTV?

Any reliable connection with enough speed for everyone at home at once. Full fibre gives the most headroom, but a good fibre-to-the-cabinet or cable line copes with HD and most 4K. Steadiness matters more than the brand.

Can my broadband provider block IPTV?

Providers apply High Court orders that block some streaming servers, and their security filters can block servers they consider risky. Ordinary IPTV player apps aren’t blocked as such.

Why does IPTV work on mobile data but not my broadband?

Something on your home connection is stopping it: usually a security filter, a court-ordered block, DNS, or a router setting. See IPTV not working on Wi-Fi for how to tell which.
