How much data IPTV uses
| Quality | Data per hour | A 3-hour evening |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 0.45–0.9 GB | 1.4–2.7 GB |
| HD (720p) | 1.1–1.8 GB | 3.3–5.4 GB |
| Full HD (1080p) | 1.8–3.6 GB | 5.4–10.8 GB |
| 4K | 6.8–11.3 GB | 20–34 GB |
Figures from the typical bitrates in our data usage guide. Each channel sets its own bitrate, so check your usage after the first few evenings.
Three ways to watch on mobile data
- On the phone or tablet itself. Use an IPTV player app for your phone. Smaller screens look fine at lower qualities, which saves data.
- Through a phone hotspot to the TV. Connect the stick or TV to the hotspot. Keep the phone close to the TV, plugged in, and away from the TV’s back panel.
- With a 4G or 5G home broadband router. A router with a SIM replaces fixed broadband. Signal strength where the router sits decides everything; near a window, often upstairs, is usually best.
Keeping data use down
- Pick lower-quality versions of channels, such as HD rather than 4K, where your playlist offers them.
- Close the player when you stop watching. A channel left playing on a TV keeps using data.
- Stop background downloads on the TV device and phone while streaming.
- Check your plan’s fair-use and tethering terms. Some plans limit hotspot use or slow video traffic.
Getting a steady picture
Mobile speeds rise and fall with signal and with how busy the mast is, so evenings can be slower. Test the channel you care about at the time you usually watch. If it buffers, a lower quality often plays smoothly. See how to stop IPTV buffering. On satellite broadband, see IPTV on Starlink.
