IPTV playlist not working? How to fix it

A playlist can fail in three ways: the app can’t download it, it downloads but can’t be read, or it loads but is too big for the device. Each shows different symptoms, and each has a different fix. Here’s how to tell which one you have.

1. The app can’t download the playlist

Symptoms: an error as soon as you add or refresh the playlist, such as “failed to load”, “check the URL” or a number such as 404.

  • Check the link character by character. Long links break easily when typed on a TV. Copy it from a phone or computer where you can.
  • Make sure the port is included, for example :8080, if your provider gave you one.
  • Test the link in a web browser. If the browser downloads a file or shows text starting with #EXTM3U, the link works and the problem is in the app or device. If it shows an error, the link or account is the problem. Our M3U URL guide explains every part of the link.
  • Try mobile data. If it downloads on mobile data but not at home, your home network or broadband provider is blocking or failing to find the server.

2. The playlist downloads but won’t read

Symptoms: the app says the playlist is invalid or empty, or shows zero channels.

  • The server returned an error page instead of a list. This is common with expired accounts. The app downloads a page of HTML and can’t find any channels in it. Check your account status.
  • The file isn’t a proper M3U. A valid list starts with #EXTM3U, and each channel has an #EXTINF line followed by its address. If you built or edited the list yourself, see the M3U tags reference.
  • Encoding problems. A list saved in an unusual text encoding can fail on some apps. UTF-8 is the safe choice.

3. The playlist is too big for the device

Symptoms: loading takes a very long time, the app freezes or crashes, or only part of the list appears. This is common on Smart TV apps and older sticks.

  • Load fewer groups. Many providers and playlist tools let you choose which channel groups to include. A list of the groups you actually watch is faster everywhere.
  • Use your app’s online save option. Some Smart TV players can keep the playlist on their server instead of in the TV’s memory. Smart IPTV, for example, describes its “save online” option as useful only when a playlist fails because of low memory.
  • Disable an external TV guide temporarily to see whether the combined size is the issue.

Our guide to editing a playlist shows how to trim a list safely.

After it loads: channels still don’t play

If the list loads but channels won’t start, the playlist is fine and the streams aren’t reaching you. Continue with channels not loading.

FAQ

Playlist questions

Why does my playlist work on my phone but not my TV?

Usually because the TV app has less memory, or a size limit, and the list is too large for it. It can also be a typing error in the link entered on the TV. Copy the link from the phone rather than retyping it, and consider loading fewer channel groups.

Why does the playlist load but show no channels?

The file downloaded but the app couldn’t read it. Usually the server returned an error page instead of a playlist (for example, because the account expired), or the file isn’t a valid M3U. Opening the link in a web browser shows what the server actually returns.

How often should I refresh my playlist?

Whenever channels stop working after a provider change, or at least every few days. Many apps can refresh it automatically on start-up; turn that on if your app offers it.
