Is IPTV legal in Spain?
Licensed IPTV is everyday TV in Spain: the major broadband providers sell TV packages delivered over their fibre networks, and the national broadcasters stream their channels online. Unlicensed services, which sell football and pay-TV channels without the rights, infringe copyright, and Spain’s football league and its broadcast partners have pushed hard to shut them down. For the checks that work anywhere, see is IPTV legal?.
Live IP blocking during football
In December 2024, Commercial Court No. 6 of Barcelona authorised dynamic IP blocking during live match broadcasts, on the application of the football league and Telefónica’s audiovisual division. From February 2025, Spain’s main ISPs, including Movistar, Vodafone and Orange, began blocking the IP addresses reported as carrying unlicensed streams during matches. By March 2025 the league reported blocking around 3,000 IP addresses each weekend.
For viewers of pirate services, the effect is predictable: streams fail as soon as a match starts. See ISP blocking and IPTV.
Overblocking: when legitimate sites go dark
Blocking by IP address has a big side effect. Many websites sit behind shared addresses from content delivery networks such as Cloudflare. When one of those addresses carries a pirate stream and is blocked, every other site on it is blocked too, for the length of the match.
During 2025, legitimate services including developer platforms, company websites and payment pages were intermittently unreachable in Spain during match windows. Cloudflare and RootedCON, the organiser of a Spanish cybersecurity conference, challenged the order, but on 26 March 2025 the Barcelona court dismissed their complaint. If a normal website or app fails in Spain only during football, this is the likely reason, and there’s nothing wrong with your connection.
Blocking orders against VPN providers
In February 2026, Commercial Court No. 1 of Córdoba ordered NordVPN and Proton VPN to block access from Spain to sites identified as streaming matches without permission, with the list of IP addresses updated dynamically. The order was made without hearing the VPN companies, which said they hadn’t been notified.
In May 2026 the same court refused the league’s request to fine NordVPN for non-compliance, accepting evidence that the reported IP addresses changed too quickly to block reliably. The injunction itself remains in place while the case continues. For what a VPN can and can’t do, see IPTV and VPNs.

UK TV for British residents in Spain
- BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Programmes downloaded in the UK can be watched in Spain.
- VPNs usually break UK services’ terms, and in Spain VPN providers are now subject to court blocking orders themselves.
- Time: mainland Spain and the Balearics are one hour ahead of the UK all year; the Canary Islands keep UK time. Set your player’s guide offset to match, using our EPG offset calculator.
Before you pay for any service
- Expect match-day failures from any service that isn’t licensed: Spain’s blocking is designed to hit exactly when you want to watch.
- Check who runs a service: a registered business, terms, a refund policy and a contact address.
- Avoid long prepaid plans: blocked services rarely refund.
