Video and audio codecs used in IPTV

A codec is the method used to compress video or audio so it can travel over the internet. Every IPTV channel uses one video codec and at least one audio codec, and your device must be able to decode both. When a channel shows a black screen or no sound while others play fine, a codec your device can’t handle is the usual reason.

Why codecs cause problems

Decoding video takes a lot of processing. Streaming devices use a dedicated chip to decode supported codecs efficiently, called hardware decoding. When a device meets a codec its chip doesn’t support, it either fails or falls back to slow software decoding. That gives the familiar symptoms: a black screen with sound, stuttering or an error. Codec not supported covers the fixes.
